Rediscovering Powered Paragliding in Cuba

Sea breeze day and total lack of meteorological wind, we hit the road
with the aim of a flight at Canasi. On our way to Santa Cruz, Carlos
said that Luisito went to El Fraile and he wanted to test the motor he
had finished days ago. Knowing he was alone there, I thought he better
wait for us to help him with whatever this new thing demands. We
arrived to El Fraile and there we saw Luis practicing ground handling
without the engine. He put the wing down as soon as we arrived and
went for the motor to test the new toy.

First try: We settled the wing as straight as possible and helped
Luisito get into the harness with the engine on his back. He hooked to
the wing and started the engine by himself with no problem. The wind
was not strong but it could reach the 15 km/h. He pulled the wing up
and his boots slipped on the ground but without falling, he kept
control of the wing for about one minute, then turned to the wind and
started the take off run increasing acceleration on the motor. For
some reason he lost control and could not take off, switched off the
engine and came back to the starting place.

Second try: We moved the wing to the grass trying to avoid slipping
and fall in the bear ground. The wing came slowly in the first part,
but then it accelerated and went in front of the pilot. Luis killed
the engine, some lines came into the propeller but fortunately it was
not turning at that moment.

Third try: The wing went up perfectly, he turned into the wind and
with the help of the engine finally took off. It was not easy at the
first moment, he needed full throttle to take off, later the climb
rate was better. He flew above our heads (+- 70m) a couple of times
and then landed very exited. It worked!!!

Then, came the chance for Carlos. First getting used to the extra
weight on his back while kiting with the wing. When he felt
comfortable Luis started the engine for him and he was finally
airborne. He flew directly to the hill, and as soon as he arrived we
could notice the orographic ascendant, but he didn't like it too much.
He came to land and was like a kid with a new toy.

My turn.

The Nova Mamboo was too big for this thin man, and I didn't dare to
try the motor for the first time with my Omega4. Then we decided to
bring Carlo's wing (Nova Mentor) that goes up to 110 kg. Still big for
me but with the engine and so on I could reach the minimum, besides
the wind was almost null at that moment. They helped me with the
harness and the motor, I tested the pressure on the accelerator and
the power. After a couple ground handling practices and getting used
to the accelerator on the right hand i asked Luisito to start the
engine. He did it but at that moment the wing lost pressure and I have
to go for a second chance. I felt I took off very easy, no need full
throttle to climb. Keeping the course, speed and acceleration of the
engine were at the beginning three different things I did  one at a
time. Then it was easier but I felt really light on that wing. I don't
think I change free flying for this, but is an experience I would like
to repeat. This is completely new for us, we are starting to discover
PPG. This is more expensive and would never be possible without the
help of Victor (Vitorazzi), Diego Renedo, Luisito, Daniel, Melania and
many many others, to all of them thank you very much!!!
